Quote of the Day

“For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.”
Stephen Hawking

Quote of the Day

“Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?”
Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time

tsk tsk tsk…

NYPD managed to score $137.2 million in lawsuits. Last year 9,502 New York City residents filed complaints against the department, that is an average of 10 per day.

Peter Valentin, a very dedicated cop, racked up almost $1.3 million in SETTLEMENTS.  Well, to be fair when you work 3 1/2 months over-time, you might overlook some rules too. In 2013 he received $126,000 for his purposeful disregard for the constitution.

With an eerie semblance to the Stephen Woods catastrophe China executed a 18 year old male for a rape/murder that he did not commit. It was only overturned due to a  miraculous CONFESSION by a completely overlooked party. Of course, this kind of thing happens all the time.No big deal. China boasts an almost 100% conviction rate, leading to 2,400 people being executed in 2013. In 1989, one man was killed for supposedly killing a woman who wasn’t even dead. The woman turned up in her village a few years later, saying she had been kidnapped.

China rules Hong Kong apparently. Haven’t figured out why yet…

The health care industry is booming! Yay! Due to this Obama Care wonderfulness, the hospitals are getting more money. They keep their rates high and more patients are insured. Well, it takes time for the rates to go down…lots of paperwork I’m sure. Meanwhile, the premium on a family health plan has risen 73% in the last decade. The worker’s portion has risen 93%. And the average spent on a family health plan (both the employer and worker portion) is $16,834

Belgium shut down its transportation today for 24 hours. Due to $13.8 billion in cuts. The [welfare state] government is planning to raise the retirement age, cancel the wage rise needed to compensate for inflation, in addition to cutting health and social security benefits. Who needs those?

In even better news, Spain’s Congress passes anti protest law, effectively abrogating democracy. It will now go to Senate, where it’s expected to pass with flying colors. You are not allowed to take pictures of police, protest peacefully, climb any monuments or buildings without permission, I could go on and on. Here is a link to a site that itemizes what is prohibited.

Last, but not least Kim Jong-Un is not happy about his head being blown up in The Interview, or so I’m assuming, since he declared the 40 million dollar budged Sony movie an act of war. Who would have thought he had no sense of humor.

Till next time.
