Quote of the Day

“Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations that’ve long since bought and paid for, the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pocket, and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and the information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them.”
George Carlin

Mind wandering…

Every time I think I know something, a few days later  something comes up that makes me question what I previously professed.

Politics.  One of the things I can’t make up my mind about. That’s why its so intriguing to me, like the vagrant downtown with the easel and messenger bag. I can’t figure out what the hell to think. Capitalism…with it’s mystery, excitement, and competition. Democratic Socialism…with it’s fairness, compassion and humanity. I believe we can have both.

I want the rush from the risk of financial loss and the excitement of the possibility of financial gain. I want people to be rewarded for working hard and materializing something great from nothing or very little. I want to hear stories of the underdog overcoming the odds and persevering. The truth is trials and tribulations define a person. Today, we thrive with incentive and enjoyment of luxury. But, I want there to be a fair chance for everybody to gain that luxury. A level playing field. Even if it’s a slim chance, but the rewards are high, and the game isn’t fixed, you are motivated and excited. But, can one ever truly have a level playing field? Differences in intelligence, and inheritance make it impossible for everyone to have a fair shot. Do you limit the genius, or the rich kid to make things fair?

Or do you settle for controlling people from extremely wealthy? Proscribing monopolies, and private citizens in bed with governments?

On to Welfare..I don’t want to see a starving child or [physically or mentally] disabled citizen shunted to the fringes of society for circumstances out of their control, but do I necessarily think everyone should be forced to assist?   I want hard work and innovation to be rewarded. But, everyone doesn’t have a family member to lean on in times of need. And everyone should have a safe place to lay their head down at night.
